This time of the year with cooler temps and fall festivals coming. It reminds me of the Chappell Hill Scarecrow Festival coming up the second weekend of October here in Texas. A few years ago I designed this scarecrow by penciling it on some plywood.
Then my dad with his band-saw cut it out for me. I then sanded and primed it.
Well, that was at least five years ago. Dad went to heaven in 2013, but lives on through things like this. That’s my dad in the heart framed photo playing his accordion, at one of many rest homes.
The scarecrows needed some love again. So, I sanded and primed it, and did a ruff pencil sketch before beginning to paint.
I blocked in my colors first and then painted the details. This farmer is “Pops”. That’s what our grandchildren call my husband. I did a kinda caricature of him here. I included a bird with nest up in the crown of his hat (with wiggle eyes).
I then gave my finished scarecrow and heavy coat of clear gloss acrylic spray to protect the paint in the weather elements.
I did the same process with the garden lady named “Nana” for me. I staked them in my flower garden, where you see I have lots of zinnias blooming. The butterflies love my flower and herb garden!
Pops & Nana Scarecrows, in the garden, with fresh cut hay in the background. I hope you enjoyed this fun post. God Bless!

Cool Sis! I was hoping you would post some of your scarecrow ideas! I still remember the awesome ones you made when you lived in North Carolina and your boys were young.

Thank you! That’s a thought about those JJ Scarecrows. I’d need to scan those photos. You always help me in some way shape or form. Thank you for your encouragement. Love you, Donna
