I received this apple pie recipe from my mother some thirty years ago. I have made some adjustments to it over the years, and it has become a family tradition to have on the Fourth-of-July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. My son, Jonathan, who lives in the northwest, has easy access to fresh apples this time of the year. He enjoys making this pie for his friends. All those years in the kitchen with Mom rubbed off! That certainly makes my heart GLOW!

Mom’s Apple Pie

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

1 unbaked pie shell

7 to 8 cups apples (pick your favorite), peeled and cubed

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup butter, soften

1 cup pecans, rough chop

Mix apples, sugar and cinnamon to coat apples well. Pour into prepared pie crust. Combine flour, brown sugar, salt and pecans. Cut in softened butter with a fork until blended. Add crumble topping to cover apples. It will be high, but it does bake down. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes, more or less depending on how you prefer your apples tender or having a little crunch. Of course this will depend too on the type of apples you are using. You need to bake pie on a cookie sheet to avoid having run overs in the oven.

You may serve it hot or cold. It’s good with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream, that’s made in Brenham, TX. When I serve it on Christmas Eve it is part of our German meal, with baked sausage, sauerkraut and sweet potatoes. YUM! I remember this traditional meal from my childhood at my grandparents Sander’s home.

Family traditions and spending time together with those we love are one of those treasures made in heaven. Matthew 6:20 – 21 (NIV) “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there you heart will be also”. Anytime we have the opportunity to spend time with family and friends we love is a time for precious memories.

I hope you’ll enjoy this recipe. Until my next delicious post….. God Bless You!
